Tips To Eliminate Your Upper Back Pain
By Jarrett Kruse
Like most back pain, upper back pain can easily be caused by the demands of modern life: sitting at a desk, driving a car, or working the same muscles over and over. The right treatment can ease upper back pain and combined with the proper back pain exercises and care, sometimes can eliminate back pain altogether. Treatment may not constitute a complete back pain cure, but strengthening and range-of-motion exercises in conjunction with any of a number of other back pain remedies can go a long way toward making you pain free, or at least experience substantial back pain reduction. Occasionally, back pain can signal a tumor—a sharp pain without corresponding injury or a pain that worsens with pressure can signal a relation between your back pain and cancer.
It’s best to consult your doctor or health care provider and get a firm diagnosis when deciding on a treatment plan. Physical therapy, chiropractics, acupuncture, and medication can all be sound treatments. Surgical is necessary only in rare cases. There are also a few things you can do to prevent and ease pain:
- Exercise. If you are in severe pain, you’ll probably need to rest for a period of time, but working toward gradually improving your strength and range of motion to prevent future pain and injury
- Stretch. A few simple stretches when you awake and throughout the day help keep you limber and less susceptible to injury. Massage can also help with tight muscles.
- Treat pain with heat, ice or combine them alternatively. A doctor or physical therapist can help you decide on the right combination to reduce inflammation and increase circulation.
- Move with your back in mind. Lift from your legs—squat don’t bend. Avoid reaching without supporting your back.
- Avoid staying in the same position too long. If you work at a desk, get up and move around often.
