Many women experience leg cramps during pregnancy, and their frequency can increase as pregnancy progresses. A few factors can contribute to leg cramps and leg pain during pregnancy, including weight gain and pressure on nerves and blood vessels. Back pain hurts during pregnancy because of added pressure on the skeleton, muscles and vascular system. Leg pain and back pain from pregnancy are often caused by the same type of pressure and are treated much as similar ailments are, with leg pain treatment including exercise, massage, and heat. Acupuncture and medication can also ease leg cramps and reduce the lower back pain that comes with pregnancy.

Leg cramps and pain down the legs is common in pregnancy, with close to half of all pregnant women experiencing these symptoms. Leg pain is usually caused by muscle spasms in the legs, which frequently worsen at night. The weight gain associated with pregnancy puts more stress on the legs. In addition, the growing baby can put pressure on nerves and blood vessels that go to your legs, causing cramping or other discomfort. There are a few things you can do to prevent or ease leg cramps during pregnancy:

  • Exercise regularly. Include exercise that increase circulation as well as those that stretch the leg muscles, particularly the calves.
  • Rest often and elevate your feet when you do, to counter the pressure on your legs.
  • Wear support stockings or surgical hose add support to your lower legs.
  • Get massage therapy or massage your own calves and legs
  • Use heat on cramps and leg aches
  • If necessary, discuss further treatment with your health care provider. Medication, acupuncture, or medication may be options for you to relive your leg pain.
