Leg pain or a leg ache can be cause by muscle strain or a leg injury. But very often pain in the legs is closely related to problems with the lower back. Among the chief causes of leg pain is sciatica, an inflammation of the sciatic nerve. frequently an underlying problem with the back is the cause, so treatment for leg pain may also involve treatment for your back. Sciatica may also cause hip pain, just as upper back or neck injury can sometimes cause shoulder pain. Luckily, may different options exists for relief of pain in the legs and back.

  • Acupuncture. This ancient Chinese method of treatment has proved successful for many patients. The acupuncturist inserts needles into particular points in the body, redirecting energy and relieving pain.
  • Medication. Some of the most common prescription drugs are mobic, naprosyn or ibuprofen as anti-inflammatories, flexeril or valium as muscle relaxers, and a variety of narcotic and non-narcotic pain relievers. A number of over-the-counter drugs, such as Advil and aspirin, are also effective in treating leg pain
  • Stretches. Pain in the extremities is frequently caused by back problems. A program of leg stretches can ease the pain in your legs and address the underlying cause in your back.
