Lower Back Pain Prevention

How To Prevent Low Back Injury

By Jarrett Kruse

The best form of low back pain treatment is lower back pain prevention. Once you fall victim to lower back pain, it can be a long road to recovery, so avoiding low back pain in the first place is a lot easier than being faced with overcoming low back pain. While many conditions that cause back pain can be a result of aging or wear and tear on the body, many causes of back pain can be prevented by regular exercise and learning how to protect your back when you move. Strengthening your muscles and gaining flexibility will not only aid in lower back pain reduction, but help you avoid, mid and upper back pain, joint stiffness, and circulatory problems.

Changing some basic habits and developing some new ones are frequently all that’s needed to avoid back pain and injury. A few basic guidelines are:

  • Get regular exercise. Lack of movement or improper movement can increase your risk of back injury and back pain. Exercise to increase your range of motion and strengthen your muscles. If you have a desk job, take breaks and move around.
  • Learn how to move properly. Protect your back when performing the simple, daily tasks of life. Don’t reach out from the upper body—protect and support your back. Ask for help when lifting something heavy. When you do lift, learn how to lift from your legs, squatting rather than bending. If necessary, use a back brace when lifting heavy objects.
  • Stretch when you begin the day. When we wake up we are usually stiff and even a slight motion can throw out the back. A physical therapist or a number of websites can give you stretching exercises that can help you limber up right away, and avoid injury or sudden strain.
