Choosing A Chiropractor
Finding And Choosing The Right Chiropractor For You
By Jarrett Kruse
Choosing a chiropractor can be challenging, especially when all you can think about is getting relief from your back pain. A friend or neighbor may have been to a local chiropractor that they trust and claim has given them back pain relief, but you’ll probably have the most confidence in someone recommended by a doctor, physical therapist, or other trusted provider from whom you have received successful back pain treatment. Even if you have faith in the benefits of chiropractic care and trust that it’s the right solution for your upper back pain, lower back pain, or other skeletal problems, you may want to do internet research to see if patients have complained about a particular chiropractor.
A trusted health care provider or friend may give you a recommendation for a chiropractor, and that’s a good place to start. But you may still want more information before you engage someone for treatment. Here are a few tips on what to look for and what to ask when choosing a chiropractor:
- Find out the chiropractor’s techniques and make sure you are comfortable with them. Some make adjustments using only their hands while others use instruments. Some use a deep popping or cracking technique and others use a lighter touch. As about the techniques and make sure you are comfortable with them.
- Look for the warning signs of questionable practice. Beware of anyone who claims to have an exclusive, new, revolutionary or proprietary technique. Beware of claims to be able to quickly cure chronic, serious illness such as cancer or diabetes. If the chiropractor claims you will need excessive treatment, such as several times a week over many months, you should be suspicious
- Look for results. With most ailments, you should start to feel improvement after a few visits. Base further return visits on positive results
